I have always wondered if testosterone boosters actually work. So I decided to give Xellerate's Test Boost for men a try.

Xellerate makes Test Boost for men; it boasts an Amazon #1 Bestseller badge and has thousands of reviews.


Xellerate Nutrition currently sells five products:



They also sell creatine and pre-workout powder. These supplements are sold exclusively on Amazon to the UK and don't have a website. You can view their product listing here.


The name Test Boost for men suggests increased testosterone levels. However, it's not quite that simple.


Xellerate markets Test Boost for men as a "testosterone support supplement" and not as a testosterone booster. It promises only to maintain and balance testosterone at normal levels but not raise them beyond that.


Although it does list some powerful testosterone boosting ingredients, so let's take a closer look.

What Is Testosterone & Its Effects?

Testosterone is one of the primary male sex hormones; it is responsible for everything from muscle growth and strength to fertility and red blood cell count.


Low testosterone is a severe problem; ideally, you would want to keep a balanced and stable testosterone level.



Having a low testosterone level or an imbalance in hormones can cause many effects, such as:

  • Low Libido

  • Reduced Muscle Gain

  • Reduced Strength

  • Weight Gain

  • Lower Red Blood Cells



What Are the Ingredients in Test Boost?

There are many ingredients in Test Boost, the full list is below if you wish to know, you can skip past this for the breakdown of the main active ingredients.


D Aspartic Acid, Magnesium Oxide, Capsule Shell (Gelatine), Maca Extract, Zinc Citrate, Fennel Seed Extract (Maltodextrin), Co-Enzyme Q10, Vitamin B5 (d-Calcium Pantothenate), Anti-Caking Agent (Magnesium Stearate), Vitamin A (Maltodextrin, Dextrin, Modified Starch, dl-alpha-tocopherol), Sodium Selenite (Microcrystalline Cellulose), Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Vitamin B12 (as Cyanocobalamin) (Maltodextrin), Vitamin D3 (as Cholecalciferol) (Acacia Gum, Sugar Cane, Sunflower Oil, Starch), Vitamin K1 (Maltodextrin), Folic Acid.

The main ingredients responsible for the effects of Test Boost are as follows.


Active Ingredients:



1) Vitamin D

Vitamin D is produced within the body when our skin is exposed to sunlight; vitamin D can alter hormones. Vitamin D occurs in two forms; D2 and D3.


Studies have shown that supplementing with Vitamin D can decrease a protein called Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG).


Free testosterone binds to SHBG in the blood and makes it inactive; reduced SHBG means more bioavailable testosterone.


Taking vitamin D can help boost testosterone and free testosterone levels. (1)



2) Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is vital for forming haemoglobin in red blood cells and for energising the immune system.


Vitamin B6 is required for the formation of androgens and, in larger doses, can help regulate the production of hormones like oestrogen; this hormone can act against testosterone.


There is anecdotal evidence of vitamin B6's capability to raise testosterone.



However, clinical outcomes concluded that although having a vitamin B6 deficiency may cause a drop in testosterone, supplementation of B6 showed no notable increase in testosterone from normal levels.


Therefore, including vitamin B6 in Test Boost is designed more as a testosterone "supportive" ingredient than a "boosting" ingredient.


If you're not deficient in vitamin B6, then this ingredient may not do much for your testosterone or hormones at all.



3) Magnesium

Magnesium can help increase free and total testosterone while also reducing fatigue and recovery time.


Studies have found that when supplementing with magnesium, both free and total testosterone levels increased significantly. (2)


Testosterone will bind with magnesium over SHBG; therefore, magnesium effectively protects your free testosterone and keeps it bioavailable.


Magnesium has an RDA of 150-280mg, so the 190mg found in Xellerates Test Boost for Men is the optimal dosage.



4) Selenium

While selenium is essential in testosterone production, it's a trace mineral and, most of the time, unnecessary to supplement with as selenium is easy to obtain elsewhere.


The recommended daily amount of selenium is 55 micrograms, so Xellerate Nutrition has covered that requirement.


However, just a single brazil nut can contain over 100mcg. Unsurprisingly, deficiencies of selenium are rare. Though, it is a valuable addition to cover that requirement.



5) Zinc

Zinc is one of the most effective testosterone boosting ingredients; zinc raises testosterone levels via two pathways:

  • Increasing LH

  • Reducing Aromatisation


Zinc increases the amount of luteinising hormone, stimulating the pituitary gland to produce testosterone.



Zinc also reduces the aromatisation of testosterone, further increasing free testosterone.


Aromatisation is the chemical conversion of testosterone into oestrogen, the female steroidal hormone. Zinc inhibits this, raising free testosterone levels.


The optimal dose of zinc is 30-40mg daily for an adult male, but Test Boost for Men contains only 12.5mg, which isn't optimal to boost testosterone effectively.



6) D-Aspartic Acid

D aspartic acid is a relatively new ingredient found in testosterone boosters.


However, this amino acid is powerful and, therefore, an excellent addition to Test Boost.


D aspartic acid acts on the hypothalamus in the brain, promoting the release of luteinising hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and growth hormone.


It is a highly effective testosterone boosting ingredient. However, no dose appears on the label, so we cannot say for sure if it's effective in Test Boost.



7) Fennel Seed

Fennel seed was a food seasoning and an ancient medicine in China, India, Greece and Egypt.


Fennel seed is branded to be an all-around male enhancement supplement; however, there is no clinical evidence to support these claims, and it doesn't boost testosterone.


At most, it may help improve blood flow.



8) Maca Root

Maca root increases libido; it does not boost testosterone, nor does it promote precursor hormones.


Maca increased sexual desire after at least 6 weeks of consumption, according to a 2010 analysis that examined four randomised clinical trials with a total of 131 individuals. (6)


If you need a libido boost, then this ingredient has you covered. However, this ingredient is not related at all to systemic hormones.



9) Co-Enzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is formed in cells; it is found in the mitochondria and is vital in producing ATP.


There is evidence to support CoQ10 enhancing blood flow, protecting blood vessels, optimising your cholesterol profile, and even limiting the building up of plaques in the arteries. (3, 4)


But, it's expensive, and no evidence supplementing CoQ10 increases testosterone levels. On the contrary, CoQ10 may decrease testosterone. (5)


However, CoQ10 is a good addition for overall well being.

Xellerates Test Boost has many benefits but also has some drawbacks; read below to see.

  • Test Boost for Men contains various proven and effective ingredients that work via different mechanisms, such as magnesium, zinc, D-Aspartic Acid and vitamin D.

  • People say it enhances energy and libido, likely thanks to the CoQ10 and maca root, though these ingredients don't do much for direct testosterone boosting.

  • Xellerate Test Boost has over 4,700 reviews and over 50% 5-star reviews with a 3.9-star average rating.

  • UK manufactured in a GMP facility.



Drawbacks

  • Test Boost doesn't define the dosage included of d-aspartic acid.

  • Co-Enzyme Q10 may slightly decrease testosterone levels.

  • Test Boost contains three times less than an ideal dose of zinc.

  • There is minimal information on Xellerate Nutrition other than customer reviews on Amazon.

  • It contains misleading ingredients like maca root and fennel seed that don't directly effect testosterone.


However, don't let these drawbacks immediately put you off, there are some very effective ingredients found in this supplement.
